Thalassa Phinisi
Questions on the two Thalassa phinisi, answered in eight groups
Updated 23 October 2026
Fifty-six answers on Thalassa 1 and Thalassa 2, in eight groups: choosing a boat, rates and what is included, cabins and decks, dates, the days at sea, occasions, booking, and first-time basics. Every figure uses the 2026 rates; anything still open is confirmed in writing before you pay.
How the eight groups are ordered
The groups follow the order of a decision. First comes the choice of boat, 11 guests or 27. Then the rate and what it includes, the cabins and decks, and the dates and open trips. The days at sea, honeymoons and groups come next, then booking and paying, and last the basics for a first visit to Indonesia.
Each group has seven questions. Where an answer depends on a detail not yet fixed, it says that the point is confirmed in writing before you pay.
The source of every figure below
Rates are the 2026 rates, valid from 1 January 2026, and every price on this page is a whole-boat rate or a division of one. Per-person figures divide a boat rate by the head count and round, and like the boat rate they are all-in, with fuel included.
Cabin and deck facts come from the boat's owner. Park fees follow the park's published tariff under PP 36/2024, and the deposit, the cancellation scale and the date-change fee follow our booking terms. Travel facts carry a checked date on their own page.
Your question is not here
Send it on WhatsApp with three details that shape any answer. They are the boat you lean toward (1 for up to 11 guests, 2 for up to 27, or not sure), the dates, and the guest count with private charter or open trip. We answer in writing.
If the answer is not on this page, we find it and send it in writing.

A 50 percent deposit confirms the booking, and the balance is due 30 days before sailing. A booking inside 30 days is paid in full at confirmation. Methods include a card link, Wise, Revolut, QRIS and bank transfer, and PayPal carries 7.2 percent.

How many cabins and guests does Thalassa 2 have?
Nine cabins and up to 27 guests. Cabin 9 is the master on the upper deck for 3 guests, cabins 1, 2, 5 and 6 are twins for 2, cabin 3 is a shared twin for 4, and cabins 7 and 8 are bunk cabins for up to 6. Thalassa 2 is sold as a whole boat only.

Yes to all three. Both boats list karaoke, a canoe and 2 SUP boards, free to use, and Thalassa 2 has a karaoke room. Snorkeling gear is free to use as well.
Is there Wi-Fi on the boats?
Local Wi-Fi on board is a hotspot from the crew's mobile signal. It cuts in and out, there is no satellite internet, and you should not plan on video calls. The same applies to both boats.
What are the boats built from?
Both are phinisi, Buginese schooners built of ironwood and teak. Thalassa 1 is 27 m long and 5.8 m wide, and Thalassa 2 is 35 m long and 7.2 m wide.
Choosing a Thalassa
Which Thalassa suits two people, a family or a company?
Thalassa 1 suits couples and families: 5 cabins, up to 11 guests, private charter or open trip. Thalassa 2 suits companies and big groups: 9 cabins, up to 27 guests, whole boat only. The choice is one of scale, the stops are the same.
How do Thalassa 1 and Thalassa 2 differ?
Thalassa 1 is 27 m with 5 cabins, two of them with a private balcony, and takes up to 11 guests. Thalassa 2 is 35 m with 9 cabins and takes up to 27. Thalassa 1 runs open trips as well as charters, and Thalassa 2 sails as a private charter only. Both are ironwood and teak phinisi sailing from Labuan Bajo.
Does a Komodo liveaboard make sense with only 2 or 3 days?
Yes. The 2D1N covers Kelor, Manjarite, Kalong, Padar and Pink Beach, and the 3D2N adds the Komodo walk, Taka Makassar, Manta Point and Kanawa. Three days is the shortest route that reaches all eight stops. Two days is enough if dragons are not the reason you sail.
Is a longer trip better value than a short one?
Per day, the longer routes cost less, because the harbor days are fixed. We publish rates for the 2D1N and the 3D2N only; longer routes are quoted on request. The 3D2N is the route that reaches every stop on the Thalassa pages, so most guests who want the dragons and the mantas choose it.
Is a Komodo trip on a phinisi worth more than a day trip?
A day trip is a quick visit. A phinisi gives you the sundown at Kalong and the Padar ridge at first light, which a day boat cannot do, and the table on deck between them. Thalassa does not sell a day trip on this site; the shortest route we publish is the 2D1N.
Is this the owner's website for Thalassa?
No. The owner of Thalassa 1 and Thalassa 2 runs the boats and has its own website. We are PT Komodo Explorer Indonesia (NIB 1805260128363), the booking partner, and we sell the trips, answer your questions and take responsibility for your booking.
What is the most guests one charter can carry?
Up to 11 on Thalassa 1 and up to 27 on Thalassa 2, one boat per charter. A party of 28 or more cannot fit on one hull. Two-boat availability for a larger party is confirmed in writing, and we never promise it in advance.
Dates and open trips
Does Thalassa 2 run an open trip?
No. Thalassa 2 sails as a whole-boat private charter only, with no seats sold. The open trip is on Thalassa 1.
What does an open-trip seat on Thalassa 1 cost?
The 2D1N starts from IDR 4,050,000 (≈ USD 248) per person and the 3D2N from IDR 6,650,000 (≈ USD 408) per person. These are from-prices for a seat; the cabin is assigned at booking and confirmed in writing. A balcony master cabin on an open trip is on request.
When is the next open trip?
The next open trip leaves on Thursday, 12 November 2026, and 4 dates are listed. Open-trip dates are one-off departures and not a weekly pattern. The list is on the open trip page, and a date held by a private charter is removed.
Can I get a balcony cabin on the shared trip?
On request, and not guaranteed. Thalassa 1 has two balcony master cabins. An open-trip seat is a from-price, and the cabin is assigned at booking. If a balcony matters, ask before you pay, or take the whole boat on a private charter and choose the cabin.
How far ahead should we book for July or August?
Write to us three to six months ahead. July and August are the busiest months, Thalassa 1 has only 5 cabins, Thalassa 2 sells as one boat, and a daily visitor cap fills the park's time slots too.
Is there a private cabin for two with its own bathroom on the shared trip?
Yes. Every cabin on Thalassa 1 has a private bathroom with hot water. The cabin type for an open-trip seat is assigned at booking and confirmed in writing before you pay. A balcony master cabin is on request.
If just two of us charter, do we pay for the whole boat?
Yes. A private charter is priced per boat, and for two guests you pay the whole boat: IDR 50,500,000 (≈ USD 3,098) for the 3D2N on Thalassa 1, fuel included. The 1 to 5 guest band covers up to five.
First time in Indonesia
Can I visit Komodo as a day trip from Bali?
Not by Thalassa. The boat sails from Labuan Bajo, and the shortest route is the 2D1N. Fly Bali to Labuan Bajo the day before, a flight of about 1 hour 10 to 20 minutes, sail for two days and fly home after 14:00.
How much does Komodo National Park entry cost?
IDR 250,000 per person per day for foreign visitors, and IDR 50,000 for Indonesian citizens on weekdays or IDR 75,000 at weekends and public holidays. Tickets are bought online and are never part of a Thalassa fare.
Do I need a visa for Indonesia?
Most nationalities use a 30-day visa on arrival or its online version, and a few Southeast Asian nationalities enter visa-free. You also need a passport valid for six months, an onward ticket and a free arrival card. Rules change, so verify before traveling.
When should I land, and when can I fly home?
Land the day before sailing, so a delayed flight does not cost you a day on the boat. Book the flight home after 14:00 on the last day, because the boat's return time is confirmed in writing.
Do you arrange pickup and hotels?
Yes. Pickup from the airport, your hotel or the harbor is free both ways on a Thalassa booking. We also sell rooms at partner hotels at the rate the hotel confirms for your dates, and we do not sell flights.
What should I pack?
A soft bag, closed shoes with grip for Padar and Kelor, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard, a head torch for the Padar climb, a light layer and cash in rupiah. Snorkeling gear is on board and free to use.
What is the best time of year to sail?
April to June and October to November give the calmest, clearest water. July and August are windier and busier, with mantas at their best. December to March is wet and quiet. Aside from the high-season dates in your quote, the rate is the same all year.
Honeymoons, families and groups
Why choose Komodo for a honeymoon over a beach resort?
A resort gives you one view. A phinisi gives you a new anchorage each day: Padar at first light, Pink Beach at midday, Kalong at dusk. On Thalassa 1 two of the 5 cabins have a private balcony, and the table on deck is laid after the anchor is down.
Is a Komodo honeymoon cruise safe?
The boats carry life rafts, life jackets, a first-aid kit and emergency oxygen, and Thalassa 1 lists a satellite phone. The harbor master issues each sailing permit and checks the weather before it. Ask us for the safety kit of the boat you prefer.
When should couples book?
Three to six months ahead for July, August and late December, one to three months for April to June and September to November. Thalassa 1 has 5 cabins and two balcony masters, so the balcony dates go first.
Is Komodo suitable for a corporate retreat?
Yes, on Thalassa 2: 9 cabins, up to 27 guests, a dining room, a sundeck and a karaoke room, sold as a whole boat. A company can ask for an invoice in its name from PT Komodo Explorer Indonesia, NIB 1805260128363.
Can we hold presentations and workshops on board?
A meeting on board or on an island is possible, and we quote it as a service. We do not list projector or meeting equipment for either boat, so tell us what you need and the answer comes in writing before you pay.
How do we get a large group to Labuan Bajo?
By air, through Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya to Komodo Airport (LBJ). Pickup is free both ways, and a Toyota HiAce seats up to 12, with a coach on request for a group of 27. Land the day before sailing.
Do children travel free, and from what age?
Children under 3 travel free, and from 3 they pay the full rate. They must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Ask us about life jacket sizes for children before you sail.
Rates and what is included
What does a private Komodo charter cost?
A private 3D2N is priced per boat. Thalassa 1 costs IDR 50,500,000 (≈ USD 3,098) for 1 to 5 guests and IDR 65,500,000 (≈ USD 4,018) for 6 to 11. Thalassa 2 costs IDR 112,500,000 (≈ USD 6,902) for 12 to 16 guests, rising by band to IDR 124,500,000 (≈ USD 7,638) for 20 to 27. These are 2026 all-in rates, fuel included.
Is fuel included in the charter price?
Yes. The charter price is one all-in figure that already includes fuel, so your quote shows a single rate for your guest band, next to the lines that sit outside the fare.
Are there hidden costs on a Thalassa charter?
No. Three lines sit outside the rate and each appears in your quote: park tickets and ranger fees, the guide and documentation on a private charter, and the personal items such as flights, hotels, insurance and crew gratuity. Nothing is added without a written quote.
Why can the final invoice differ from the quoted price?
Because lines you add later are not in the first quote: a guide, a photographer, a larger vehicle, a celebration on deck. The rate itself does not move once the quote is accepted. The invoice repeats the quote line by line, and any addition appears as its own line in writing.
What is the smallest group for a charter?
On Thalassa 1 a charter starts from 1 guest, and 1 to 5 guests share the same band at IDR 50,500,000 (≈ USD 3,098) for the 3D2N. On Thalassa 2 the lowest band starts at 12 guests, so a smaller group pays the 12 to 16 band at IDR 112,500,000 (≈ USD 6,902).
Is a charter priced per person or per boat?
Per boat. The rate covers the whole boat for the trip, whatever the number of guests inside the band. Per-person figures are a division of the boat rate by your head count, rounded, and they are all-in too.
Can I book 2027, and at what price?
Yes. Today's price list holds until the owner issues one for 2027. Should that change your price before the balance is due, you hear it from us first and may cancel at no charge. Private charters can be reserved for any date, and open-trip dates for 2027 are on request.
How much are the Komodo National Park fees with KEXI?
KEXI quotes the park as one package per guest: 3D2N: IDR 650,000 per foreign guest, IDR 350,000 per Indonesian guest. It bundles the government entrance ticket (IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per day, PP 36/2024) with the ranger fee and local levies, and is paid on top of the boat price unless your quote says it is included.
The days at sea
How many days do you need in Komodo?
Three days cover the main stops: Padar, Komodo and Pink Beach on day 2, with Kelor, Kalong and Kanawa on either side. Two days reach Padar and Pink Beach but miss the Komodo walk. Longer routes are quoted on request.
What does a 2D1N tour cost?
On Thalassa 1, IDR 41,500,000 (≈ USD 2,546) for 1 to 5 guests and IDR 52,000,000 (≈ USD 3,190) for 6 to 11, whole boat. On Thalassa 2, IDR 82,500,000 (≈ USD 5,061) for 12 to 16 guests. Each is one all-in rate that already includes fuel.
How long should a honeymoon on Komodo last?
Three days and two nights, because it reaches Padar, Komodo and Pink Beach and leaves a full evening at Kalong. Two days work if time is short. A balcony master cabin on Thalassa 1 gives the quietest mornings.
What happens if the weather changes the plan?
The captain decides the route on the day, on the advice of the weather, the harbor master and the park. Stops can swap or shift, and Manta Point and Taka Makassar are the pair where the tide picks one. A change of route is not a cancellation. If the boat cannot sail at all, the substitute-boat guarantee applies.
Will we see a Komodo dragon?
Dragons are wild, and no sighting is promised. The ranger on the Komodo walk knows where they rest that morning.
Is Komodo Island open in 2026?
Yes, with closures for weather. Staged closures ran from 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026, and Komodo and Padar closed from 6 to 8 August 2026 with Rinca open. We tell you the position before you pay, and the captain moves the route to the stops that are open.
How does a day on board run?
By the light. The morning breeze takes you to a walk or a first snorkel, the hot still middle of the day is for swimming, and in the evening the sails stay down and the table is laid on deck. The captain sets the stops each day from wind, tide and the harbor master's orders.
Check availability: Thalassa
Thalassa is published and booked by PT Komodo Explorer Indonesia, a booking partner for Thalassa 1 and Thalassa 2. The boats belong to their owner.
