Which Komodo phinisi: Thalassa 1 for 11 guests or Thalassa 2 for 27

Updated 23 October 2026

For the best Komodo phinisi boat, choose by size: Thalassa 1 for 2 to 11 guests (5 cabins, 2 with a balcony, charter or open trip), Thalassa 2 for 12 to 27 (9 cabins, charter only). The 3D2N whole boat starts at IDR 50,500,000 (≈ USD 3,098) and IDR 112,500,000 (≈ USD 6,902), fuel included.

Two sizes of the same sea, row by row

The table below sets the two boats on the same rows: length, cabins, guests, balcony, route, rate and the single seat, which exists on Thalassa 1 only. Nothing in it ranks them. Where Thalassa 1 comes out ahead on a row, Thalassa 2 falls behind, and the other way round.

Thalassa 1 is 27 m with 5 cabins for up to 11 guests. Thalassa 2 is 35 m with 9 cabins for up to 27 guests. Both are ironwood and teak, both carry a canoe and 2 SUP boards, and both sail the same Komodo stops.

Most bookings are decided on one row, the guest count. Up to 11, the small hull is yours. From 12, only the large one will do.

From-prices are the lowest band for each boat. Open the vessel's rates page for every band and what each fare includes.

Cost per head on each hull

These are all-in 3D2N figures per guest, fuel included. Thalassa 1 with 11 guests costs IDR 5,950,000 (≈ USD 365) each. Thalassa 2 with 12 guests costs IDR 9,380,000 (≈ USD 575) each, and with 27 guests IDR 4,610,000 (≈ USD 283) each.

So the large boat is dearer per head at 12 than the small one at 11. It becomes cheaper per head only because it carries more people, and only in its upper bands. That's a fact about the hulls, not a saving we're offering.

Price rarely makes the choice. A party of 10 does not move to Thalassa 2 to save money, because the 12 to 16 band is the lowest it can pay. A party of 14 cannot use Thalassa 1 at all.

Private or open trip: what changes

A private charter means the boat is yours for the days you book. You pay the boat rate for your band and choose the cabins. The rate is one all-in figure that already includes fuel, and it is confirmed in writing before you pay. Guide and documentation are not included, and both are available on request.

An open trip means you share Thalassa 1 with other guests, up to 11 aboard, and pay per person. A 2D1N seat starts at IDR 4,050,000 (≈ USD 248) and a 3D2N seat at IDR 6,650,000 (≈ USD 408). The balcony Master cabin is on request.

Thalassa 2 offers only the first. It never sells a seat, so a solo traveler or a pair hoping for an open trip should read about Thalassa 1.

When the other hull is the right one

Thalassa 1 is the right hull for couples, honeymooners and families, and for any friends who want a small boat of up to 11. It is also the only one with a balcony cabin and the only one with seats.

Thalassa 1 under its red sails is a 27 m hull with bean bags on a shaded sundeck. Thalassa 2 is the right hull for companies, reunions and large families of 12 to 27 who want one boat and one invoice. It has the lounge and the karaoke room, a dining room built for a group, and nine cabins in a range of sizes.

  • Thalassa 2 fits better if you are 12 or more: Thalassa 1 stops at 11.
  • Thalassa 1 fits better if you are a couple: the lowest Thalassa 2 band starts at 12 guests.
  • Thalassa 1 fits better if you want a balcony: only Thalassa 1 has one, in 2 cabins out of 5.

Thalassa 1 Buginese schooner

Who this boat suits

  • couples on a honeymoon or an anniversary who want a private balcony in a Master Cabin Sea View
  • families and friends of up to 11 who want the whole boat to themselves
  • travelers who want a seat on a small-boat open trip, with at most 11 guests aboard
  • small groups of 2 to 5 who prefer to hire the hull and set the pace

Who it does not suit

  • groups of 12 or more, because 11 is the most Thalassa 1 carries
  • guests who need a balcony on an open trip with certainty, where the Master cabin is on request

When another boat fits better

  • you book the Private or Share cabin and expect a balcony: only the two upper-deck Master cabins have one
  • you plan a company retreat of 15 and hope to squeeze in: the answer is Thalassa 2

Thalassa 2 Buginese schooner

Who this boat suits

  • companies and teams of 12 to 27 who want one boat and one invoice
  • reunions, wedding parties and large families sailing together
  • groups who want the sundeck, the lounge and the dining room to themselves
  • organizers who need a karaoke room and a dining room big enough for everyone

Who it does not suit

  • couples and small parties, because groups under 12 pay the 12 to 16 band
  • anyone who wants a single cabin or a single seat: Thalassa 2 is sold as a whole boat only

When another boat fits better

  • you are 8 people and expect a lower price: the lowest band starts at 12 guests
  • you want a private balcony cabin: Thalassa 1 has two, and no Thalassa 2 cabin has one

Splitting 28 guests, or sailing them on one hull

One charter is one boat. The largest group a single hull carries is 27, on Thalassa 2. A party of 28 cannot sail together on either boat.

Booking both boats for the same dates is another matter, and we can't promise it: availability of two boats on the same dates is confirmed in writing, and the quote for each hull is separate, with its own all-in rate.

If you are 28 or more and want to sail together, send the dates and the count. Our team asks the owner and replies with what is free.

One workable shape is 27 guests on Thalassa 2 and the rest on a Thalassa 1 open trip, if a date is listed. Each booking keeps its own quote and its own deposit.

FAQ

What is the maximum group size for a Komodo private charter?

27 guests, on Thalassa 2. Thalassa 1 carries up to 11. A group above 27 cannot sail on one hull, and booking both boats is confirmed in writing.

Which Thalassa has a balcony?

Thalassa 1. Two of its 5 cabins, the Master Cabin Sea View on the upper deck, have a private balcony. No Thalassa 2 cabin has one; the boat has a shared balcony deck on the upper deck.

Can 12 people take Thalassa 1?

No. Thalassa 1 carries up to 11 guests, and there is no twelfth berth. A party of 12 books Thalassa 2 and pays the 12 to 16 band.

Is the bigger boat less private?

Not on a private charter. Thalassa 2 is sold as a whole boat, so a group of 20 has the nine cabins, the dining room, the lounge and the sundeck to itself.

What if we are 28?

One hull carries 27 at most. A party of 28 cannot sail on one boat, and two boats on the same dates is confirmed in writing, with a quote for each.
