Bali to Labuan Bajo flight: getting to your Thalassa cruise for the first time
Updated 23 October 2026
Most first-time visitors fly Bali (DPS) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ), about 1 hour 10 to 20 minutes, and land the day before sailing. Visa, money and signal rules follow below. Where a fact changes, the page says verify before traveling. We cannot sail you from Bali on a day trip.
Landing at Komodo airport, from Bali or Jakarta
Komodo International Airport, code LBJ, lies 2 to 3 km from the harbor, about 10 minutes by car. Most guests connect through Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB), and Lombok and Kupang feed it from the smaller side.
Flight times are short. Bali takes about 1 hour 10 to 20 minutes, Surabaya about 1 hour 30, and Jakarta 2 hours 30 to 3 hours. Schedules and airlines change, so check them when you book, and verify before traveling.
People ask whether a day trip from Bali to Komodo Island works. For a sailing it does not: the boat leaves from Labuan Bajo and the route needs at least two days on the water. Land in Labuan Bajo the day before and fly home after 14:00 on the day you return.

What the immigration desk at the airport asks for
Most visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight, so the visa step happens before you board for the island.
Our table lists the rules we have checked: the visa on arrival or its online version, the length of stay, the passport rules, the onward ticket, the free arrival card and the Bali tourist levy. Rules and fees change, so read the table with the checked date in mind. Do not rely on a fee you saw on a forum; the immigration site is the authority.
| Visa on Arrival (VoA) | Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. |
|---|---|
| e-VoA | The same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days. |
| VoA / e-VoA price | IDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly. |
| Length of stay | 30 days from the day you arrive, single entry |

Money, cash and cards
Bring rupiah in cash. Cards work at hotels, boat companies and larger restaurants, with a surcharge on some, and small eateries, markets and taxis take cash. ATMs stand near the harbor and at airport arrivals, and none stand in the national park or on the islands.
Withdrawal limits per transaction are modest, so draw what you need in Labuan Bajo before you board. A crew gratuity is not part of the fare on a private charter, and it is appreciated and never compulsory. The table gives a common range.
The Thalassa fare is paid by the methods your quote lists, in the deposit and balance steps. What you carry on board is for tips, drinks that are not part of the fare and small purchases ashore.
| Currency | Indonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026 |
|---|---|
| ATMs | BCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board. |
| ATM limits | IDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges |
| Cards or cash | Cards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash. |
| Tipping | Appreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range. |

A mobile hotspot at sea, not a broadband line
Local Wi-Fi on board is a hotspot from the crew's mobile signal. It cuts in and out, there is no satellite internet, and you should not plan on video calls. Offshore, the signal is patchy between the islands even on the best network.
Telkomsel has the widest coverage around Labuan Bajo. A SIM must be registered with a passport, and an eSIM installed before you fly is the quickest way to land with data. The table gives the options.
Tell the people at home that the days at sea are quiet. Download maps, music and books before boarding, and use the harbor on the last morning for anything urgent.
| SIM cards | Every SIM must be registered; visitors register with a passport |
|---|---|
| Best network | Telkomsel has the widest coverage in Labuan Bajo and offshore; signal is still patchy between the islands |
| eSIM | Install it before you fly and activate it on landing; a typical plan of 25 GB for 30 days costs about USD 15 to 22 |

Sun, salt water and what to pack for them
Pack light in a soft bag, because a cabin has little room for a hard case. Bring closed shoes with grip for Padar and Kelor, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard and a head torch for the Padar climb.
Tap water in Indonesia is not safe to drink. Mineral water is provided on board. Mosquito protection matters on land, where dengue is present. Bring your own prescription medicines, because pharmacies in town have a limited range, and take travel insurance with medical cover and evacuation.
The nearest private hospital is in Labuan Bajo, and the table lists the emergency numbers. Tell us about allergies or conditions when you book, and the crew knows before you step aboard.
| Insurance | Travel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended; add dive cover if you dive |
|---|---|
| Private hospital | Siloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo, Jl. Gabriel Gampur, +62 385 2440 666; it has a hyperbaric chamber |
| Public hospital | RSUD Komodo, Labuan Bajo, with an emergency unit; no hyperbaric chamber |
| Pharmacies | Available in town with a limited range; bring prescription medicines and sunscreen from home |
| Emergency numbers | 112 general; 118 or 119 medical; 110 police; 115 search and rescue |
| Health risks | Dengue, chikungunya and malaria are present, so protect yourself against mosquito bites. Rabies exists in dogs and monkeys: seek care at once after a bite. |

The harbor on boarding morning
At the harbor, the harbor master's office issues each boat's sailing permit, and the park office controls access to the park. Passengers on boats to the park need an electronic boarding pass, and the name on it must match the passenger list, so the names on your booking must match your passports.
Pickup time and meeting point are confirmed in writing with your booking. A driver collects you from the hotel or the airport and takes you to the jetty, where the crew meets you with the tender.
Rough weather can close sailings at short notice, on the harbor master's order. When the order keeps the boat in port, we move you to a phinisi of the same class or higher on the same dates at no extra cost, or refund you in full within 14 days.
| Who decides | The harbour master's office (KSOP Labuan Bajo) issues each boat's sailing permit; the park office (Balai Taman Nasional Komodo) controls access to the park |
|---|---|
| Boarding pass | Passengers on boats to the park need an electronic boarding pass, and the name on it must match the passenger list; your boat company registers you |
| Safety on board | The harbour master's guideline requires life jackets and liferafts sufficient for everyone on board, no more passengers than the boat's capacity, and a weather check before each sailing permit |
| Recent closures | 1 to 8 February 2025: Komodo and Padar closed, Rinca only. 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026: staged closures, with all tourist boats held from 14 to 20 January 2026. 6 to 8 August 2026: Komodo and Padar closed for waves and wind, Rinca open. |
