Grandparents, parents, children: cabin by cabin

The five cabins on Thalassa 1 are two upper-deck Master Sea View doubles with a private balcony, two lower-deck twins and one lower-deck Share cabin for 3 guests. All are air-conditioned with a private bathroom. Grandparents may prefer a balcony cabin, which has a private bathroom and a private balcony.

A family of 11 fills the boat exactly: for example two couples in the balcony cabins, four children in the twins, and three more in the Share cabin. Smaller parties choose from the same plan. Which cabin names sit on which cabin type, Seahorse, Shark, Octopus, Turtle or Diver, is confirmed with your quote.

The bed-by-bed table is on the Thalassa 1 berths and rates page.

Which walks to skip, and which to keep

Every walk on this route is optional, and a family plans by who climbs. Kelor on day 1 is the one most families keep: 15 to 30 minutes up a short hill, and a fair test before the bigger climb. Padar the next morning is for older children and fit adults, 25 to 45 minutes on a loose path, starting about 65 minutes before sunrise. Grandparents who skip it get breakfast on deck and the same bay from below.

The water suits small swimmers at Pink Beach and, on the 3D2N, the shallow Taka Makassar sandbar. Komodo is a ranger-led walk of 45 to 120 minutes, with closed shoes and a hat. Manta Point has current, so it is for confident swimmers. Kalong at dusk asks nothing of anyone: the flying foxes are watched from the deck.

The captain decides the stops and their order by the weather and the sea. The stop lists by day are on the 2 days, 1 night and 3 days, 2 nights pages.

What the boat does and does not have for children

Thalassa 1 lists 20 plus 1 life jackets, 2 inflatable life rafts of 6 guests each, 2 ring buoys, 6 fire extinguishers, first aid, emergency oxygen, GPS tracking, radios and a satellite phone. It has a canoe, 2 SUP boards and fun floats.

Child-specific equipment (cots, child-size life jackets, high chairs) is not listed for Thalassa 1. Ask us before you book if you need one of these; child sizes are confirmed in writing before you pay. Children under 3 are free when accompanied; from age 3 a child counts as a guest.

Rest, sun and sea

The sun does more damage than the sea on this route. Shade is thin at Taka Makassar and on the Komodo trails, so hats, long sleeves and reef-safe sunscreen are what a family packs first. Closed shoes with grip are needed for Kelor and Padar.

Keep the days short for the youngest and the oldest. Midday on deck, under the shaded sundeck, is the rest hour on this boat. The air-conditioned cabins give a cool place to lie down. Pack in a soft bag, with personal medicines in a day pack. Sea conditions vary by month: calm and clear from April to June and October to November, windier in July and August.

Costs for a family of six

A family of 6 sits in the 6 to 11 guest band, so the whole boat for 3D2N is IDR 65,500,000 (≈ USD 4,018), which is IDR 10,920,000 (≈ USD 670) each, fuel included. A family of 5 or fewer pays IDR 50,500,000 (≈ USD 3,098). The price is one all-in rate that already includes fuel, and it is confirmed in writing before you pay.

The ranger fee and local levies are not charged on their own: they sit in KEXI's park package with the government ticket (IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per day, PP 36/2024), and it comes on top of the boat price unless your written quote lists it as included. On a private charter the guide and photo and video documentation are not included; both are available on request and quoted separately.

FAQ

Is Komodo safe for young children?

The park is, with its rules. A ranger leads every walk on Komodo, and the boat lists life jackets, life rafts, radios and emergency oxygen. Child-specific equipment is not listed for Thalassa 1, so the safety comes from the pace, which the captain and your family set each day.

Are life jackets available in child sizes?

Thalassa 1 carries 20 plus 1 life jackets, and child sizes are confirmed in writing. Ask us before you book if you need a small size, and bring your own if you want certainty.

Can grandparents do the Padar climb?

Many do, at their own speed. The climb takes 25 to 45 minutes on a loose, steep path, and the start is before sunrise. Grandparents who skip it watch the light from the deck with breakfast, then join the family for Pink Beach.

What age travels free?

Children under 3 are free when accompanied. From age 3 a child counts as a guest for the head count and the band. A family of 5 and one child aged 4 becomes 6, and moves into the 6 to 11 guest band.
