Best time for a Komodo honeymoon cruise: the dry months, the quiet months, the wind
Updated 23 October 2026
The calmest, clearest months for a Komodo honeymoon cruise are April to June and October to November, 5 of the 12. July and August are windier and the busiest, and December to March is wet and quiet. The Thalassa rate is the same all year apart from the high-season dates in your quote.
Twelve months by their wind
Komodo's year turns on the wind. From April to June the sea is calm, the water is clear and the dry weather is settled, which makes these months the easiest for a first sailing. In June the south-east wind starts to build toward July.
July and August are dry and windy, with rougher water and the largest crowds of the year. Mantas are at their best then, and the anchorages are busy. September eases the wind, clears the water and keeps the mantas, which is why it is a strong shoulder month.
October and November return to calm and clear, with fewer boats than in July and August. December brings the first rain and the mantas back, and late December is busy with holiday travelers. January to March is the wet season: showers, a rougher sea, lower visibility and the quietest water of the year.
The grid shows sea, visibility, mantas, crowds and rain for each month.
| Month | Sea | Visibility | Mantas | Crowds | Rain | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | rough | low | peak | low | wet | Wet season at its height: heavy showers and the roughest water of the year, with low visibility. Few boats are out and manta sightings are at their best, so it suits a couple who want an empty anchorage and accept a swell. |
| February | rough | low | peak | low | wet | Still wet, with rough water and low visibility. The anchorages are quiet and the mantas stay. A honeymoon here trades calm for solitude. |
| March | moderate | medium | good | low | wet | The last wet month. Showers ease, the sea settles to moderate and visibility climbs to medium, with few boats about. |
| April | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | April opens the dry months: flat water, and some of the clearest reef of the year below the hull. Crowds sit at a medium level. |
| May | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | Dry, calm and clear. Snorkel and trek days are the most predictable of the year, and the evening deck is still and warm. |
| June | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | Dry and clear. The south-east wind begins to build toward July, so mornings under sail are livelier. |
| July | rough | medium | peak | high | dry | The dry wind is up: a choppier sea, medium visibility and the busiest anchorages of the year. Mantas are at their peak. |
| August | rough | medium | peak | high | dry | The windiest dry month, with busy anchorages. Mantas feed in season, and the water stays at medium clarity. |
| September | moderate | high | peak | medium | dry | The breeze softens and the water clears to high visibility again. Mantas are in season and the crowd drops to medium, a strong month for a couple. |
| October | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | Calm, clear and hot, and the anchorages are emptier than in July and August. A quiet month for a honeymoon. |
| November | calm | high | fair | low | dry | The dry season closes with calm water, clear views and some of the quietest stops of the year, the easiest month for a slow honeymoon. |
| December | moderate | medium | peak | medium | wet | The rains begin, and with them the mantas return. Holiday weeks are crowded, and a 10 percent charter supplement applies on the dates in your written quote. |

A quiet honeymoon: the wet-season trade
A couple who wants the water to themselves can have it from December to March, and the trade is real. The sea is rougher, showers arrive in short heavy bursts, and visibility under the surface drops. In exchange, the anchorages hold few boats, the Padar ridge has room, and mantas are at their best in January and February.
For a honeymoon the question is what you want from the days. Balcony mornings and calm swims point to April to June or October and November. A quiet bay and a manta drift point to the wet months, with a plan B built into the route by the captain.
Wet-season sailings are also easier to hold. The harbor master can suspend sailings at short notice in rough weather, and a flexible start date helps. If the boat is kept in port, you sail on a phinisi of the same class or higher on the same dates at no extra cost, or we refund you in full within 14 days.
The busy weeks and the surcharge dates
Two stretches of the calendar are crowded: July and August, and the weeks around Christmas and New Year. The first is a wind-and-crowd season. The second is a holiday season that raises the private charter rate.
The private charter rate carries a high-season supplement of 10 percent for 23 to 27 December 2026 and for 30 December 2026 to 2 January 2027; your written quote shows it. No supplement applies to an open-trip seat.
For July and August, write to us three to six months ahead if the dates matter. For April to June and September to November, one to three months is comfortable. A daily visitor cap applies at Padar, Rinca and Komodo, so a crowded month fills the park's time slots as well as the boat.
Sunrise at Padar, sunset at Kalong
Light moves through the year too. Sunrise at Padar falls at 05:31 in November and 06:18 in July, and the boat leaves for the climb about 65 minutes before it. A honeymoon booked for November starts its second morning early, and one booked for July starts it later.
Sunset at Kalong falls between 17:49 and 18:27, and the flying foxes leave about 15 minutes after it. The two tables below give the figures month by month.
Both stops are part of the Thalassa 3D2N, one at each end of day 1 and day 2. A calm month gives a clear horizon at both.

Closures and park notices
Komodo is open for visitors, and the park closes parts of itself for weather. Staged closures ran from 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026, with all tourist boats held from 14 to 20 January 2026. Komodo and Padar closed from 6 to 8 August 2026 for waves and wind, with Rinca open.
The harbor master issues each boat's sailing permit and the park office controls access, so a closure is a decision of those two offices and not of the boat. The captain then moves the route to the stops that are open.
Check the park notices if you travel in the wet season, and ask us for the current position before you pay. Park entry is IDR 250,000 per person per day for foreign visitors and IDR 50,000 for Indonesian citizens on weekdays, and it is never part of the fare.
FAQ
What is the best time to visit Komodo for a honeymoon?
April to June and October to November give the calmest water and the clearest views, which suits balcony mornings and long swims. September is a strong shoulder month. For a quiet bay and a manta drift, December to March is the wet-season alternative.
Is Komodo Island closed in 2026?
No. The park is open, and it has closed parts of itself for weather. Staged closures ran from 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026, and Komodo and Padar closed from 6 to 8 August 2026 with Rinca open. Ask us for the current position before you pay.
Is July or August too crowded for a honeymoon?
Both are the busiest months, with windier water and full anchorages, and mantas are at their best. A private charter on Thalassa 1 keeps the boat to your party, but the stops themselves are shared with other boats. April to June and September to November are quieter.
Can we sail in the wet season?
Yes. Sailings run from December to March, with showers, rougher seas and lower visibility. The harbor master can suspend them at short notice. If the boat is kept in port, you sail on a phinisi of the same class or higher on the same dates at no extra cost, or we refund you in full within 14 days.
How early should we book for July or August?
Write to us three to six months ahead if the dates matter, because Thalassa 1 has 5 cabins and Thalassa 2 sells as one boat. A daily visitor cap at Padar, Rinca and Komodo fills the park's time slots too. April to June and September to November need one to three months.
